Technical Writing and Editing Samples

Used Books

October 2017

The first of my samples displays my ability to form an argument on a specific topic, conduct research on it, and then use that research to frame my chosen topic. It also showcases my ability to work as part of a team, as this proposal was written with a colleague.

This proposal was written as a response to the question, “How can we make our degree program better for students?” It lists three areas of improvement—identifying course prerequisites, explaining the foreign language requirement, and giving more support when choosing a minor or certificate. I first gave solid evidence that any enhancements are even needed, and then list various ways to further develop these areas of the program. I made sure to keep my audience in mind and only suggested fixes that could be implemented immediately, but still yield good results.

My individual sections were "Language Requirement" and "Choosing a Minor or Certificate." However, I also assisted with finding images and examples for the appendices as well as worked with my partner to edit the entire document.

Open Book

January 2017-April 2017

This sample showcases my abilities to document and create instructions for a specific program. In this case, that program was Podio, an internal communications system used by the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council. This section details instructions for two of the apps used in the program: Girl Programs and Business Services. You will see that it follows an organized and consistent format that makes the instructions easy for its audience to follow.

My role in this project was as writer and editor, as I was tasked with not only researching and writing my sections, but with editing the chapter of one of my fellow group members. I was also part of the small group who edited the entire document as a whole once the manual was completed.

The section I wrote spans pages 27 to 44. To view my excerpt of the Podio Handbook, click the link above. To see the full handbook, click the link below.

Please note that I have obtained permission from the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council to display their manual in my portfolio.

Piles of Books

August 2016-December 2016

In this sample, you will see my ability to research material and compile it into organized and easy to follow information suitable for any type of audience. This piece also showcases my leadership and collaboration abilities, as it was written as part of a group.

My role within the group was writer and editor. I conducted research and pulled from a variety of sources to gather the information for my section. Towards the end of the production process, I became part of the team in charge of editing the entire document and getting it ready for publication.

The section I wrote spans pages 131 to 140. To view my excerpt of the Style Manual, click the link above. To view the full manual, click the link below.
